friend or foe

Chlorine... Friend or Foe?

Choosing the correct water treatment for your Spa can be a difficult process and so our water Technician Sally has put together this fantastic Question and answer guide to help you decide about our good old friend/enemy Chlorine!

  • Chlorine a friend or foe?

There is no simple answer to this question because chlorine can be both friend and foe. On the plus side chlorine is the best sanitiser known to man, and a very important part of the sanitisation process. however, the negative effects of high levels of chlorine on human health and our fragile environment are very well documented

  •     What are the advantages and disadvantages of chlorine?

Bacteria enter a pool  in various ways but the most prevalent is via bathing. These bacteria if allowed to breed can cause health issues to bathers such as skin rashes, sickness, diarrhoea or even death! Chlorine is extremely effective at killing bacteria when they are in the water but the problem is that they don’t stay there for very long. As soon as bacteria enter the water they make their way to the nearest surface and produce a slime known as biofilm to stick themselves on. Once attached, they bury themselves under the biofilm and it serves as a safe shelter allowing them to feed and breed virtually unmolested by chlorine or any other sanitiser. So even though chlorine is an excellent sanitiser, it falls short in the process of eliminating bacteria from our pools.

  • What methods can be employed to reduce or eliminate chlorine?

Although some products do suggest that they are totally chlorine free, this is misleading as  the small print normally tells the user to chlorine shock the water regularly! In my opinion chlorine  could not safely be eliminated from the water sanitation process although it can be dramatically, yet safely reduced by addressing the biofilm issue

  • Are there any pitfalls to avoid?

‘Biofilm’ is the buzz word in water care as we have come to learn that over 99% of bacteria do not actually live in the water but under a slime which they create in order to feed, breed and shelter. This process takes only a very short period of time and once attached, bacteria are virtually impossible to kill. Some unscrupulous companies are making spurious claims about the removal of biofilm. Buyer beware! Before investing in any so call ‘biofilm eliminators’ check their credentials.

  • What products do you offer that reduce the need for chlorine in pools?

For more than ten years AquaFinesse Pool has proven to be the trusted name in water care worldwide. By simply adding one environmentally friendly pool tablet to the water weekly, AquaFinesse will break down both biofilm and calcium and prevent further build up. Without the opportunity to ‘stick’ bacteria are trapped in the free water phase and easily killed by small amounts of chlorine! Voilà

  • Is there anything new for 2016?

AquaFinesse is constantly developing new and exciting environmentally friendly products to compliment its award winning water care range. For 2016 they have launched a ‘dead sea’ mineral based skin moisturizer for use after bathing.

  • How do you see the future of water treatment?

As our understanding grows we become more aware that we need to reduce the amount of chlorine used in our pools, and the only way to safely do this is by addressing the issue of biofilm. Here is the good news, treating biofilm is as simple as one AquaFinesse tablet once a week – problem solved!

  • Anything else to add?

Understanding biofilm is simple. If you bleach your kitchen sink it looks lovely and clean, but take apart the waste pipe underneath and you will see that it is full of slime (biofilm) this means that the bleach has not touched the slime and therefore the bacteria hiding beneath. The same thing happens in your pool! Luckily the answer is simple…… aquafinesse hot tubAquaFinesse  – The gentle giant in water care.

deep clean

How to Deep Clean Your Hot Tub

How to Deep Clean Your Hot Tub

If a hot tub has not been used for a while it may need a little TLC before you can jump back into it with your friends and family for a nice hot soak. By following this every 6 months in between your 3 monthly water replacement you water should remain safe, clean, and clear for you and your family.

1.Flush the Jets

Using the old water from your tub – the jets will all require a good flushing! Open them all up, and put your hose right up to the jets to back wash them. This will help remove any unwanted build-ups.

Add Aqua Finesse Spa Clean – This is a tablet that needs to be dissolved in a bucket of hot water then added to your spa water with a chlorine shock. Your hot tub will need to be left running for 12-24 hours (depending on the condition and age) and the jets activated often so the solution can be properly circulated through pipe work. The solution will help dissolve and loosen debris and calcium deposits which can damage the internal mechanisms of your spa. (During the deep clean please ensure all jets, air blowers, waterfalls etc., are on the open position)

2.Clean the Cover and Shell

Whilst you are waiting for this to happen we recommend getting a cleaning your spa cover with some Cover Cleaner 303 to remove and algae, dirt and grime. Remember to clean the inside of the cover too, this can be done with a solution of something like milton fluid then leave in the sun to dry.

Once you finished the deep clean you can drain your hot tub and remove the jets to check if any of them need cleaning or replacing.

3.Replace or Clean your Filters

Before refilling your hot tub you will need to replace your filters. If you are not sure which filters your spa uses please call a member of our team and we will happily help you to purchase the correct filters. Otherwise, clean your filters, we recommend AquaFinesse ‘fizz’ Filter Cleaning Tablets. A good filter should last between 6 to 12 months before needing replacing.

4.Let it Dry

Now that you have given your hot tub a really good clean I’m sure you are ready to refill it and jump in but you must be patient. Leave the hot tub to dry. Leave it over night and then you can inspect it for cracks, stains, mildew and any other damage. If your hot tub is damp these issues may be disguised so it is best to let your hot tub dry out so these can be addressed.

5.Check the Electrics

Since your hot tub has been sat unused for awhile it may well be worth having a look at the wiring before you refill it and turn it on. Our qualified servicing and engineering team are able to do this for you.

6.Add your Chemical and Sanitisers

Once everything has checked out ok you can refill your hot tub, turn it on and add your chemicals including sanitiser. Once you have allowed the jets to circulate the chemicals through the water properly you can check your pH levels, Total Alkalinity and Calcium Hardness, and sanitisers are all within the correct range. If that is all good…. JUMP IN!

Aquafinesse for Pools?

For the past 3 years I have used Aquafinesse in my hot tub and am extremely happy with its simplicity and effectiveness. I also have a swimming pool and was wondering if I could use Aquafinesse in that too, if so would it be the same system that I use for my tub or is there something specifically designed for pools?

Yes, there is a special system for swimming pools produced by AquaFinesse called the Pool Puck it works in the same way as your hot tub treatment by eliminating bio film (the slimy sticky substance where bacteria breed) but as the name suggests it comes in tablet form rather than liquid. You will be pleased to know that it is also a simple weekly treatment, customers report outstanding results even in cleaning up the grouting between the tiles, but being an AquaFinesse product it is also environmentally friendly and kind to your skin, and pool equipment.
