New Hot Tub, Where to start?

Date: 20/02/2009

We have inherited a hot tub with our new house, it has been empty for about 6 months and looks in need of a good clean, with spring quickly approaching we really would like to use it but having never owned a tub before we are not sure where to start.

If your spa has been sitting empty for a little while it will probably need a deep clean before you can use it. Dependent on the age and condition of the spa you may wish to have a qualified electrician check it over before starting with the cleaning process.

If headrests are removable take them out, clean (See note 1) and put them aside. Remove filters, clean (See note 2) and return them to the tub. For the sake of hygiene it is probably best to buy a set of new filters for your spa, but it would be practical to use them first for the deep clean.

Wipe down the inside of the spa with a Spa surface Cleaner. Fill tub with water, ensure that all jets are set on the open position to enable treatment of internal equipment and pipe work. This is very important as these areas are a favourite place for bacteria to shelter and colonise.

Add chlorine granules to the water at a rate of 20ppm (parts per million) and one Spa Clean tablet to the skimmer basket. Turn on all jets and air blowers and allow to run for 15 minutes, repeat this process at least 4 times over a 24 hour period. Your hot tub will now be ready to empty (See note 3) and refill with clean fresh water.

Enjoy your new spa!

Note 1. Tip for cleaning headrests, wipe over with a solution of diluted Milton Fluid - available from most super stores and chemists.

Note 2. There are many varied filter cleaning treatments on the market we recommend the AquaFinesse 1 hour soak filter cleaning tablet for the above process.

Note 3. To empty your hot tub quickly and without mess a good investment is a Submersible pump
